The coat of arms of the Dukes of Leinster derives from the legend that John FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Kildare, as a baby in Woodstock Castle, was trapped in a fire when a monkey rescued him. The FitzGeralds then adopted a monkey as their crest (and later supporters) and occasionally use the additional motto Non immemor beneficii (Not forgetful of a helping hand).

bulletArms: Argent a saltire gules.
bulletCrest: A monkey statant proper environed about the middle with a plain collar and chained or.
bulletSupporters: Two monkeys, environed and chained as in the crest.
bulletMotto: Crom a boo (Now it would be spelt "Crom Abu". In English, "Up Croom", or "Croom to victory"; Croom was one of their castles).

Norman, Welsh, and Legendary
Ancestors of the FITZMAURICE
Lords of Kerry

This chapter in the history of the FITZMAURICE families begins with legends and gradually acquires substance as we approach 1100 A.D. Although the story is fairly well substantiated for 1100 A.D. to about 1220 A.D., I am sensitive to the need for greater access to primary sources even for that period.

bullet
One of the greatest of Anglo-Irish families over the next four
centuries, the FitzGerald's were comprised of two main branches
bulletThe "Leinster" branch known as the Earls of Kildare
bulletThe Dukes of Leinster
bulletThe "Munster" branch known as the Earls of Desmond
bulletThe Earls of Desmond.

The latter family was destroyed as a great power in the Tudor wars of the 16th century in which they played a leading part.

Leinster House

The former palace of the Duke of Leinster. Since 1922, it has been the seat of both houses of the Irish parliament.

The man who built the Leinster House was James Fitzgerald, the 20th Earl of Kildare. He began construction in 1745, the year of the civil war in Scotland which culminated in the defeat of "Bonnie Prince Charlie" at Culloden. In 1747, James Fitzgerald married Emily Lennox, the daughter of Charles Lennox, the Duke of Richmond, and a godfather to King George II. As a result of this favorable marriage, James was made Viscount Leinster in 1749 by George II and later the Duke of Leinster in 1766 by George III.

William Fitzwilliam FITZGERALD* was born between 1140 and 1174 and died between 1192 and 1260 in Eyre, County Chester, England.. . The “Fitz” means “son of”, i.e. son of Gerald. His father was: *William FITZGERALD* was born before 1100 in Carew Castle, Pembrokeshire, Wales (photo on the left) and died 1173 in Carrucastle in County Pembroke, England. He inherited Carew Castle and is the ancestor of the family Carew.

William FITZGERALD's father was:

Gerald FITZ WALTER de Windsor, who was born between 1065 and 1070 in Windsor, Berkshire, England and died 1136 in England. He married Nesta Rhys, daughter of the Prince of Wales in about 1089. Nesta was firstly, mistress to Henry I; secondly, she married Stephen, Constable of Cardigan; thirdly, she married Gerald FITZ WALTER of Windsor.

From the book, Garretts: 1000 Years From Normandy, the surname Garrett was the baptismal name "the son of Gerard". The name was brought to England in the wake of the Norman Conquest of 1066 (see next paragraph). In English records various spellings used almost interchangeably are: Garratt, Garrot, Garat, Gerard, Gerrard, Fitzgerald (used in Ireland), Gerald and Garrett.

In the Year 1477 Garret More Fitzgerald becomes Eighth Earl of Kildare; elected Viceroy (Justiciar). King Edward IV sends Lord Grey to replace Garrett More; Grey unceremoniously sent back to England

The Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (also known as the Viceroy or in the Middle Ages as the Lord Deputy) was the head of England's (pre-1707) or Britain's (post 1707) administration in Ireland.

Until the 1500s Irish or Anglo-Irish noblemen such as Gearoid Mór Fitzgerald, 8th Earl of Kildare and Gearoid Óg Fitzgerald, 9th Earl of Kildare traditionally held the post of Judiciar or Lord Deputy.

Margaret O’Brien

Note:  There is disagreement about how many Earls of Desmond there were.  Some researchers assign different numbers to the Earls, and some acknowledge a dual numbering system.

Margaret O’Brien , above, was a daughter of Conor O’Brien (died July 19,1329)  of Thommond, who was a son of *Turlough O’Brien*, grandson of
*Tadhg O’Brien,*  and great-grandson of *Brian Boru

  The Wedding of

Juan Carlos of Spain and Sophia of Greece

With the ties of the Fitzgerald's to the house of Hanover, Sophia is
a descendant of Queen Victoria through both her parents.

King Paul I of the Hellenes was the youngest son of King Constantine I and Queen Sophie, born a Princess of Prussia.

Image:Queen Sophie Dorothea of Prussia.jpg

Sophie was the third daughter of
Kaiser Friedrich III and Kaiserin Victoria, who was Queen Victoria's
eldest child. Sophia's mother, Frederica of Hanover, was the only
daughter of Duke Ernst-August of Brunswick and Princess
 Victoria

The House of Hanover (the Hanoverians) is a Germanic royal dynasty which has ruled the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg (German: Braunschweig-Lüneburg), the Kingdom of Hanover and the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland. It succeeded the House of Stuart as monarchs of Great Britain and Ireland in 1714 and held that office until the death of Victoria in 1901. They are sometimes referred to as the House of Brunswick and Lüneburg, Hanover line. The House of Hanover is a younger branch of the House of Welf, which in turn is the senior branch of the House of Este, with all three being offshoots of the ancient Saxon House of Wettin.
